Calendar of Events::

  • First announcement: 15 October 2007
  • Pre-registration and abstract submission deadline: 30 November 2007
  • Second announcement: 7 January 2008
  • Final registration & abstracts deadline: 4 February 2008
  • Final program (on WWW): 18 February 2008

SMESE Overview:

The Small Explorer for Solar Eruptions (SMESE) mission is a French-Chinese satellite dedicated to the combined study of coronal mass ejections and flares. Its payload consists of a Lyman alpha imager and a Lyman alpha coronagraph (LYOT), a far infra-red telescope (DESIR) and a hard X and gamma ray spectrometer (HEBS). Its Sun-synchronous orbit will allow for continuous observations. It should operate by the end of 2012.

Objectives of the Workshop:

The aim of this workshop is to assemble the solar community experts involved in Coronal Mass Ejections (CME's) and Flare studies in the framework of the upcoming SMESE mission; to inform the community about the capabilities of the SMESE instrumentation; to assess how the SMESE mission can best meet its objectives; to establish specialist working groups and to form links between theoreticians, observers and instrumentalists from both the CME and Flare communities.

Preliminary Scientific Program:

  1. Recent results from SOHO, TRACE, STEREO, /Hinode/ and RHESSI on the physics of coronal mass ejections, flares, eruptive events associated with the production of energetic particles, and the interplay between these phenomena,
  2. Progress achieved, and/or to be expected, from high temporal resolution and long temporal coverage of eruptive events; access to very high-energy particles, simultaneous disk/off-limb coverage, ...
  3. Key problems to be addressed by SMESE,
  4. Required measurements,
  5. Instrumentation and mission profile.

Program Organization:

The meeting will start on Monday morning with general presentations. The three following half-day sessions will be devoted to CME's, Flares and the CME-Flare common science; they will each comprise two invited reviews, invited and selected oral contributions and posters. The Wednesday concluding session will end at lunch time.

Proceedings:

Information will be given in the 2nd Announcement

Conference Fee:

There will be a conference fee of 100 euros including the admission to all scientific sessions, coffee breaks, conference material, welcome reception and workshop dinner.
